Instructions for Personal Graduation Plan Checklist

Coursework

House Bill 5 (HB 5), passed by the 83rd Texas Legislature and signed by the governor, provides for a new set of graduation plans for Texas students. These graduation plans consist of a foundation plan for every Texas student and five endorsements from which students may choose, depending on their interests.

Students entering 9th Grade must choose from one of the following endorsements:

  • STEM (Examples: Science, Mathematics, Engineering)
  • Business and Industry(Examples: Agriculture, Construction, Design, Hospitality, Information Tech., Manufacturing, Automotive Tech)
  • Arts and Humanities (Examples: Social Studies, Art, Dance, Music, Spanish)
  • Public Services(Examples: Child Development, Psychology, Teaching, Health Science, Cosmetology, Nutrition)
  • Multidisciplinary Studies(Examples: Undecided; a combination of two other endorsements)

Students may change their endorsement at any time prior to graduation.  Caution is advised that changing endorsements after the beginning of the junior year, may not leave enough time to complete requirements of the new endorsement selection.

To qualify as part of the top ten percent of their graduating class and qualify for automatic admission to state schools, students must successfully complete Algebra II along with their endorsement requirements.

Testing

Students are now required to pass five State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) end-of-course exams to meet the new graduation requirements:

  • Algebra I (9th grade)

  • English I (Reading/Writing) (9th Grade)

  • English II (Reading/Writing) (10th Grade)

  • Biology I (9th Grade)

  • US History (11th Grade)
